PhD is a doctoral degree with an academic focus. A PhD course is three years duration and candidates need to complete the course within a maximum time span of five to six years.
Candidates can pursue a PhD programme in any stream. In a PhD course aspirants need to select a topic or a subject and do in-depth research on it and answer any queries related to the topic/ subject. The course will include a coursework followed by a research program. The candidate will have to perform research on any one of the topics and submit the thesis at the end of the course.

Any aspirant who wants to pursue a Ph.D. in the subject/ field of their choice needs to have a lot of interest and passion for the topic at hand. A Ph.D. requires aspirants to study a topic in-depth and so candidates need to possess the required skill-set and dedication along with being extremely hard working when pursuing a Ph.D. Apart from these skills, candidates should be good at performing research and collaborating the findings of research conducted by them.
A Ph.D. also requires aspirants to be quick and good with presenting their thoughts and findings and so it is a requirement that candidates be well-versed with written communication and have good writing capacity.
Aspirants are eligible to pursue a Ph.D. course only if they have completed their masters degree in a similar course/ field/ stream in which they want to pursue a Ph.D. The Master's degree should be from a university that is recognized by the UGC (University Grants Commission) of India.
Students who have received a Masters or equivalent Degree with a minimum of 55% aggregate in the relevant field are eligible for Ph.D. Arts course. The applicant must qualify in the national or university level entrance exams to get eligible for the course. The course will include a coursework followed by a research program. The candidate will have to perform research on any one of the topics and submit the thesis at the end of the course.
There are lots of good reasons to do a Ph.D. from wanting to make an original contribution towards your discipline and achieving your career ambitions through to a passion for research and a desire to accomplish something big. Many students who pursue a PhD, do so because they are passionate about a specific subject, and want to use their research time to make important discoveries within that field.
One of the great things about your PhD is that you will be able to conduct your own research. If your thesis and your findings are strong and relevant, other experts within your chosen area of academia will reference your work and your discoveries when teaching future students.
The modern Ph.D. is a surprisingly versatile qualification that develops a wide range of transferrable skills. Universities also support students within broad doctoral programmes that focus on developing employable Ph.D. graduates. All of this means that the job market for PhD students is quite diverse.
Many students do go on to careers in higher education, but these include administration and leadership positions as well as academic posts. Others take their research and teaching expertise into other professions including secondary and further education, industry or public administration.
