Since 2007, Biotechnology has been taught as a subject at the erstwhile PanditS.N. Shukla College Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, India. The Department of Biotechnology was formed within the Faculty of Applied Sciences after Pandit S.N. Shukla College was upgraded to a Pandit S.N. Shukla University Shahdol in 2017 to serve the requirements of students in frontier areas of Biotechnology and to do research in the area.
The department now offers two academic programmes in biotechnology: a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. Since the department’s founding, Professors Radha Singh (2017–2023) and Professor Kaushalendra Kumar (2023-23) have held the position of head. Currently, there are two Assistant Professors who are permanent members of the department’s faculty, one guest faculty member.
In addition to office space, the department also features two research labs, one smart classroom, and two teaching classrooms. The department intends to provide Ph.D. and research programmes in the future. In light of this, the department hopes to increase the number of faculty members in the near future in order to strengthen the current teaching and research fields and to advance biotechnology. The Department makes an effort to apply knowledge for the benefit of people while placing proper priority on fundamental research and education. A vast field of biology with an interdisciplinary focus, biotechnology uses biological systems, living things or its parts, and cellular and biomolecular processes to create technologies that enhance our quality of life. Biotechnology has a wide range of uses, although it is most frequently used in the fields of medicine and health.
The mission of the Department for Biotechnology is to provide the best education to the students in the different areas of Biotechnology to shape their sustainable future to serve the Nation and Global communities. The Centre will emphasize on excellence in interdisciplinary research to produce highly skilled human resource through implementing advanced IT techniques for teaching of M.Sc. and B.Sc. Biotechnology programs. Implementing Experimental Learning, Project Work, field studies and continuous assessment. Improvising Academic quality of faculty members by timely scientific updating through Faculty Development Programs (Orientation and Refresher Course), Workshops, Seminars and Conferences. Strengthening Research quality by bringing the extra-mural grants and research projects to the department.
Sustaining and enhancing the quality of research by publishing quality research papers and patents, consultancy and facilitate the Dept. by modern research infrastructure and advanced equipment’s. Regular update of the course curriculum is to be done to meet out the demand of recent academia and industry.
The ultimate aim of the department for Biotechnology is to provide the best opportunity to students in the field of Biotechnology and to attain the national and global recognition in education, training and research
