The Department of Geography was established in 1956 under the Government College Shahdol, at present being the best center of the division for geography education, the students from the remote areas of the division and the nearest districts take admission in the department for studies. Currently in the department B.A. / M.A. courses are being conducted and Ph.D. scholars are doing research work for the degree. At present, the Department of Geography is functioning as a research center in the Swarna Jayanti building of the University.Dr. Anil Kumar Gupta is the Head of the Department.

The department has a glorious history of sharing their domain knowledge and research at national academic platforms. The department has produced research of national repute, published in national journals. The department has a Practical Lab and all practical related instruments. The faculty of the department is committed to train the students to develop their skills in geoinformatics, surveying, statistical analyses and landscape interpretation. These skills are integral to the course and help the students in their research pursuits. Presently, the department has four experienced and devoted faculties. The department has been pioneer in the teaching of Cartography, Geomorphology, surveying etc.

Under the New Education Policy 2020, the curriculum was implemented in the BA first and second year students of the department, due to which there has been a positive impact on the academic quality of the students.
